Architectural ceramics: a beautiful new option for non-combustible cladding

Walking through Australia’s cities and suburbs, you’d be forgiven for thinking that aluminium panels and cement render had become default materials for the cladding of buildings. Perhaps one of the reasons that they’re so noticeable is that neither age particularly well. An aluminium facade can quickly become shabby, with wear and tear from the elements and physical impact most noticeable at street level. And render – simply a layer of cement applied to a vertical substrate and painted – is inherently susceptible to degradation in the form of unsightly salt leaching, fading paint and cracking caused by building movement.

Choosing the best kitchen benchtop material: Caesarstone, Natural Stone or Ceramic Slab?

Given the popularity of Caesarstone and other engineered or reconstituted stone products, you might assume that they're the best option for kitchen benchtops. But in reality, there are many aspects of this material that make it a poor choice, and a poor investment for anyone fitting out a new kitchen. Reviewing engineered stone alongside natural stone and ceramic slab products makes its shortcomings all the more apparent.

We are very pleased to announce that we have added to our extensive portfolio with the introduction of the Le Corbusier: LCS ceramics based on Le Corbusiers' Polychromie Architecturale. A colour system innovated by Le Corbusier; the first in its kind for architectural ceramic surfaces application.

Le Corbusier

Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris, better known by the pseudonym Le Corbusier (1887-1965), is considered the most significant architect of the modern age. Amongst the most influential characters of the history of contemporary architecture and of the 20th century culture, he is remembered as the master of the Modern Movement. A pioneer in the use of reinforced concrete in architecture, he has also been one of the fathers of contemporary town planning.

His works still have a considerable influence on architecture and design today. He designed many buildings and drew up numerous urban development plans throughout the world and today the majority of his architecture has been recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage.

Artedomus introduces its latest discovery from Portuguese porcelain tile specialists Feri & Masi. Unique is a stunning collection of unglazed double and triple-loaded porcelain stoneware offering an endless number of concrete plates with incomparable raw touch and outstanding design.

Inspired by the masters of Japanese minimalist architecture, this exclusive collection of three different finishes – Unique, Unique (Be) and Unique (Be Smart) – achieves a real concrete aesthetic through Feri & Masi's innovative production process.

Designed for residential or commercial applications, Unique offers architects, designers and clients a contemporary concrete aesthetic and feel with the outstanding durability, low porosity, low maintenance requirements and ease of installation of an extremely high quality porcelain tile.

Angelo Mangiarotti Architect

One of the most influential personalities in 20th century Italian culture, Angelo Mangiarotti was an architect, planner, designer and sculptor. He also taught extensively at Italian and international universities, passing on his visions and shaping the minds of generations of young architects and designers. His design approach was rooted in the firm belief that architecture was a practical discipline and that industrial design was an expression of fine craftsmanship. He wanted each individual material to be respected and to be used in an adequate and honest way. The perhaps best-known Mangiarotti quote, "happiness comes from honesty", is a reference to that approach. Additionally, Mangiarotti was deeply committed to general ethical standards.

The Riverview House by Nobbs Radford Architects is a deft reworking of a 70s brown brick house in Sydney. Skillful design achieves a minimalist feel without sacrificing warmth. The clever introduction and use of materials such as stone, concrete, solid timber, steel, porcelain and copper work back with the original elements of the house – including parquetry and timber beams – creating a materiality and richness of texture that is fresh and modern.
