Yukari House by Tanev Muir Architects is located in Byron Bay, at the peak of a leafy street which adjoins the Arakwal National Park. This award winning project is a thoughtfully reimagined residence that harmoniously blends Japanese and Australian design elements.
The architects, who were named winners of the Residential Interior category at the 2024 (Emerging) Designer Awards, were inspired by Japanese culture and aimed to emphasise life’s day-to-day rituals, crafting nuanced spaces that allow residents to linger in the moments between activities.

The home’s design comprises a series of rooms both connected and partitioned using joinery. The kitchen, central to the home’s new role, features a fine spotted gum table slotted into a monolithic stone island, facilitating collaboration and shared meals. “The kitchen was the most important aspect to our client,” says Laura Muirhead, architect at Tanev Muir Architects. “We moved the kitchen to the centre of the home; this was integral to its new role of housing a space of collaboration, coming together and cooking shared meals.”

Yukari House was celebrated for its thoughtful and sophisticated design approach that establishes a sense of deliberate, refined execution while deeply connecting to its natural rainforest setting, not least of all aided by a fabulous outdoor bathing zone featuring an Agape In-Out Bath.
