We recently hosted an Open House in the penthouse at Surf Hotel Torquay, in Victoria. Local architects, interior designers and stylists from Geelong and nearby came together to experience Artedomus materials in action, in a beautiful hotel setting.

With drinks on arrival and catering by local favourite Mortadeli, guests explored the penthouse apartment and joined product presentations by Artedomus managing director Phil Brenton. New bricks were displayed on the balcony, while furniture, tile boards and material samples invited closer inspection throughout the interior.

The penthouse offered a living example of our materials in use. Italian terracotta by Cotto Manetti lined the floors throughout the penthouse and the hotel’s restaurant, while Japanese Arute ceramics featured around the fireplace. Furnishings produced by Cotto Manetti for Artedomus offered another way to experience terracotta’s tactile qualities.
“People sometimes perceive terracotta as a cold or hard material,” says Artedomus architectural sales representative Nick Conway. “We stayed in the Surf Hotel – which has been designed by the Torquay studio, Pasquale Cook – and were walking around barefoot, and it was warm and cosy.”

For designers considering terracotta for their projects, the setting also demonstrated how the material develops character with use. “This way, designers are able to send their clients into the restaurant at Surf Hotel and they can view the material in use, and confirm whether they like the patina it develops as it ages,” Nick adds.
This, our second Open House gathering, gave us a chance to be on the ground in Victoria with designers from the local region, building upon connections through a shared appreciation for craftsmanship.
