Mistral by Barber & Osgerby is reminiscent of terracotta vent tiles traditionally used in rural Italian barns and outbuildings to provide natural ventilation. Taking this subtle architectural detail, the designers have reimagined it in the function of a partition, using it to shield and reveal. Mistral, available in shades of Black, Owl and White, can be used horizontally and vertically to create artful plays of light and shadow, indoors and out.

Mistral is composed of a single terracotta module handcrafted for casting, geometrically refined and proportioned, available in 1 2,5×25,5×1 2,5 cm sizes.

Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby

Barber and Osgerby opened their London-based studio in 1996, after graduating from the Royal College of Art. Their multidisciplinary approach pushes the
boundaries of industrial design, architecture and art. Their works include collections for Knoll, Vitra, B & B Italia, Cappellini, Venini and Flos, limited edition
pieces and commissions such as the London 201 2 Olympic Torch and the £2 coin designed for the Royal Mint.

“We have always been fascinated by the making process, whether hand-crafted or machine-made, and we see no reason why certain materials, products or buildings cannot sit next to each other in a contemporary or traditional environments.

“During a visit to the Italian countryside, we noticed how terracotta vent tiles were also used to provide natural ventilation in rural barns and out-buildings. We started thinking about their function as a partition, shielding or revealing certain details, creating cones of light and shadow within the solid stone walls of the ancient farmstead. This was what brought us to Mistral.”
